Across the Nullarbor - Roadtrip from Perth to Sydney
Achtung seeeeehr langer Bericht ;)
Day 1 (2.12.)
We left Perth on December 2nd and it was really hard to say goodbye because Perth was a kind of home for us in the last four weeks. We met a lot of very nice people and had a lot of fun. The Old Swan Barracks was/is a very very nice hostel and if we come back to Perth we will stay there again.
Our first stop on our way to Sydney along the coast was Busselton, a small town on the sea. After setting up our tent on a campsite we had a 2km walk on the longest Jetty in the southern hemisphere.
Day 2 (3.12.)
This day we got up very early and drove via Margaret River to the Boranup Karri Forrest. We stayed there over night in the National Park. On our way we tasted chocolate, cheese and wine in different factories.
Day 3 (4.12.)
We woke up very early on the next day and started our trip to the Diamond Tree. This is a 51m tall tree you can climb on. But only Martijn was brave enough to do this very dangerous climb. We stayed for the night in a National Park where the Fernhook Falls were. Instead of our tent we slept in a small hut made of wood with an oven in it.

Day 4 (5.12.)
Our first stop on this day was the “Giant Tree Top Walk”. You have to pay 8 Dollars to walk through the tree tops of a unique tingle forest. It was very very high ;-) (40meters). After this spectacular walk we drove to the “Green Pool”. It´s a part of the sea with a lot of rocks in it and some of them look like elephants, that’s why they´re called “Elephant Rocks”.
After a short stop in Albany we made our way to the Wave Rock, where we arrived really late. We stayed at a camp-site near the rock.

Day 5 (6.12.)
On the next morning we made some pictures of the Wave Rock and the Yawn Hippo. At 10 o`clock we left Hyden and drove to Esperance, a very nice city with great beaches and bays.
We drove around and had a look at the Great Ocean Drive. Unfortunately we couldn`t see the Pink Lake because of a bush fire.

Day 6 (7.12.)
We left Esperance and our next stop was Borseman. We got some fuel for the car there because we knew that the next fuel station is far far away. Honestly the way from Borseman to Adelaide is about 2000 km….
On Sunday we drove about 500 km and we crossed Australias largest straighten road (90 miles). We spent this night at a picnic area somewhere in the outback.

Day 7 (8.12.)
We got up very early because this day we wanted to drive about 1000 km. The drive was very boring. We crossed the Nullarbor and slept almost the whole day during Marco was driving. This night we stayed at Kimba, a very small town about 500 km away from Adelaide. This time we paid for the caravan park because we desperately had to take a shower:P

Day 8 (9.12.)
After almost 5 hours drive we arrived in Adelaide after a short stop in Port Augusta. We went to the cheapest hostel we could find and checked in. We walked around and at 10 pm we met a friend from Germany. We went out and had fun – in a Stripclub, because nothing else was open.
Day 9 (10.12.)
This morning we organised ourselves (did some laundry..) and then we explored Adelaide. We walked around and enjoyed the good weather in the botanical garden and did some shopping

Day 10 ( 11.12.)
We drove very far on this day and finally reached the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. On our way we had a look at the Blue Lake and the nice coast at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road. In the evening we looked for a campsite where we checked in only two people, just because there was a barrier at the entrance

Day 11. (12.12.)
When we got up in the morning it was very dusty and cloudy. We were lucky and reached the London Bridge and the 12 Apostels bevore it starts raining. The 12 Apostels are very amazing. We saw them on the pictures we looked at every day while learning for our final exams but we couldn´t imagine to be there one time. It was a very very nice. The only thing that was really annoying were the Japanese: “Can you take a picture of us?” and five minutes later the same: “Can you take a picture of us, pleeeeease?”
The rest of the day we drove further and it was raining and raining and raining…

Day 12 (13.12.)
Today we reached Melbourne. The first we thought was…”wow it looks like Stuttgart”. And that’s true. There are a lot of old houses. It is a really beautiful city. In a brochure we read that Melbourne is the most European city in Australia – we know why.
In the evening we met Nesli, Eva, and Kai from Germany and went to the Crown Casino.
Day 13 (14.12.)
A day like every day in the city...J We walked around and had a look at the shops. In the evening we went to the Eureka Tower, a big building in the middle of the CBD where you have a great view over the city.

Day 14 (15.12.)
Like every city, Melbourne has a Botanical Garden. We walked a long way to see it but it wasn´t worth it. So we went to the place where all the sport centres are. We saw the arena where the Melbourne open take place and walked around.
In the evening we visited Linda in her Hostel and drunk a lot of “Goon” (The cheapest wine you can find in Australia -> Backpackerwine) On our way home we met an old friend ‘Ric’, who we got to know in Perth. It was a very cool coincidence and we decided to meet him again the next day.
Rod Laver Arena -> Melbourne und Australian Open (Tennis)
Day 15 (16.12.)
We slept veeeeery veeeeeery long and went to the Queen Victoria Market. It was so amazing…you can buy very cheap vegetables and fruits there. That’s a big difference to the Woolworths or the Coles, the big supermarkets in Australia. After that we went to the library to go in the internet for free and what a coincidence we met another friend from Perth ‘Fredi’.
In the afternoon we met a friend from Linda`s hostel and went with him to St. Kilda. There we met Ric and another german friend of Chrissi. We sat on the beach, walked up and down the jetty (where we have seen some penguins), went to a bar and after all we went in a Park where we fed some opossums. Unfortunately we had to go back to the city very early because the last train left about midnight.

Day 16 (17.12.)
We got up very early and checked out. We drove to a nice but small island, called Phillip Island, about 80 km away from Melbourne. There we went to ‘The Nobbies’ where you can see some seals. In the evening we went to the `Penguin Parade`. It was very cool! You can sit on the beach and have a look how the penguins come out of the water. Unfortunaltely it was forbidden to take pictures.
This night we stayed at a camp-site on the island.
The Nobbies
Day 17 (18.12)
We had breakfast and decided to leave the island because there was nothing else to see. We went to the pelican feeding. And then we drove to the Wilsons Promontory National Park, the biggest National Park of Victoria. The weather was not really good so we decided to take a short walk. We walked to the Norman Beach and then to a small Mountain. The view was very nice. After this we went to the Whiskey Bay where we watched the sunset.
Day 18 (19.12)
The first thing we did this morning was going to the information centre. We wanted to take a walk to the most southerly point of Australia but the woman told us that it would take us 12 hours so we decided to skip that and drive further.
Our next stop was the Raymond Island where we could see some koalas. They were soooo cute…we could´ve spent hours there but then we saw a duck with a broken leg and called the ranger. Two people came and tried to catch the duck but it flew away. The woman said, that it could have a chance because it was able to fly.
This night we stayed at a campsite on the way to Canberra. As always we only drove onto it without paying…hey we´re poor backpackers, we can´t afford every night on a campsite
Day 19 (20.12.)
This morning it was the first time, that we parked the car outside the campsite and walked in to have a shower. But this was a big mistake…somebody saw us walking in and went to the owner of the campsite. When we came out of the shower he asked: “Did you sleep here tonight” So we had to pay 3 dollars each for the showerJ
After breakfast we drove to Canberra. With its 350000 inhabitants it is the capital of Australia. When we arrived there and walked around we could hardly believe that this is the capital of such a big country. It was sooooo quiet. Nobody was on the street and it was Sunday. So we had a look at the new and the old Parliament and the Australien National Museum and then made a part of our way to the Blue Mountains.

Day 20 (21.12.)
Finally we arrived in the Blue Mountains and drove into the Blue Mountains Nationalpark. There we had a look at the Red Hands Cave, with Aboriginal Art and at the Jellybeans Pool. After that we went to the Wentworth Falls where we hat so walk through Rainforest and go down a lot of steep stairs to reach the middle of the waterfall. The way back was very horrible because we had to climb up all the stairs we walked down before.
Our next stop was at the Three Sisters. They are very very great and that’s why we watched the sunset there. After that we looked for a campsite and find one which is the first campsite in the rainforest…veeeery nice!!!

Day 21 (22.12.)
We slept very long and had breakfast in the rainforest. After that we went to the Three Sisters again to take a walk.
After that we drove to the Botanical Garden and relaxed in the sun.
This night we stayed in a park. We didn´t really know if it´s allowed to camp there but we couldn´t find a campsite.

Day 22 (23.12.)
After a horrible night with a lot of interruptions…for example a police officer who knocked on our door just to ask if everything is alright…we woke up very early and made our way to Sydney.
